Vinicius Junior has informed Real Madrid that he does not want to renew his contract while his relationship with manager Xabi Alonso remains strained.

The Brazilian delivered the message directly to club president Florentino Perez during a private meeting late last month, according to multiple sources familiar with the situation.

His current deal runs until June 2027, but negotiations over an extension have been stalled since January after both sides failed to agree terms.

The situation escalated after Madrid’s 2-1 win over Barcelona on October 26, when Vinicius reacted angrily to being substituted and later apologised to Perez for the outburst.

During that same meeting, he made it clear that committing his long-term future is not an option for him while tensions with Alonso persist.

Those tensions have been growing since the summer, with sources close to the player repeatedly raising concerns about the manager’s treatment of him.

Vinicius has completed only five of Madrid’s 17 matches this season and has been benched several times, which he views as evidence that he no longer holds the importance he enjoyed under Carlo Ancelotti.

He also chose not to mention Alonso in his public apology after El Clasico, a decision that surprised senior figures and highlighted the depth of the rift.

Alonso has tried to play down the issue in press conferences and has insisted that rotation is necessary for the squad, although frustration with the constant scrutiny is evident.

Madrid’s hierarchy has attempted to reassure Vinicius and show support, but they also told him that his reaction against Barcelona was unacceptable.

The contract dispute is not only about his role under Alonso, as financial terms remain far apart despite Madrid offering an increased salary of around €20 million net per year.

Vinicius’s representatives responded by requesting a record-breaking package reaching up to €30m per season, including bonuses, which would match the highest level ever given at the club.

Talks continued into the start of the campaign but have now stalled completely, with the club aware that the strained personal dynamic is a significant obstacle.

Perez remains fond of Vinicius, and key figures inside the club hope that strong performances from the team and the forward can reopen the path to an agreement.
