Newly appointed Nottingham Forest manager Vitor Pereira has vowed to do all he can to rescue the Tricky Trees from relegation.
Pereira was announced as Forest’s new manager following the abrupt dismissal of Sean Dyche, who was sent packing after a goalless draw with his successor’s former employers, Wolverhampton Wanderers.
The 57-year-old becomes the fourth permanent manager to take charge of Forest this season – the most by a club in a single campaign in Premier League history.
Pereira would also be the tenth permanent manager to work under Greek millionaire owner Evangelos Marinakis since he took over Forest in May 2017.
While he has pledged to do his best to pull Forest away from relegation threat, Pereira is also aware that his role doesn’t necessarily come with job security.
Nuno Espírito Santo, Ange Postecoglou, and, more recently, Dyche have all fallen victim to Marinakis’ shirt fuse and low tolerance for poor results from his managers.
Pereira has made it clear that he knows exactly what he’s walking into, having worked with Marinakis during his time as Olympiacos owner.
His tenure in Greece was successful as he won the Greek league and cup double during his five-month spell in 2015. Marinakis will hope he has a similar impact at Forest on such short notice.
“In football, you can’t talk about a three-year project,” Pereira said (via The Times).
“Football is about the next game, then the next game, then the next game. If you’re looking for security, you cannot be a manager.”
Pereira then praised Marinakis’ hands-on approach and vowed to fight until the end to ensure Forest don’t slip back into the Championship.
“This owner is ambitious,” he said. “He wants to win, he’s emotional, and I know him very well.
“Every time now, the players have to prove what they get. If I think that we’ll get by without hard work and suffering, it’s not possible.
“If you buy the idea of the manager, it’s a good step. If you don’t buy it, it’s a big problem. You must also buy the personality.”
