Wahbi Khazri remains part of Tunisia’s coaching team after head coach Sabri Lamouchi was sacked following the 5-1 World Cup defeat to Sweden.
The Tunisian football federation confirmed the dismissal in a statement on Instagram and said plans were under way to appoint Mondher Kebaier as interim coach.
Lamouchi was removed on Monday after a turbulent start to the tournament. He had been appointed in January and oversaw just five matches.
Pressure had intensified before the World Cup after a 5-0 friendly defeat to Belgium in Brussels. Tunisia now face Japan on Saturday at the same stadium in Guadalupe where Sweden won.
They will then complete their group campaign against the Netherlands in Kansas City.
For Khazri, this is a remarkable first major tournament as part of Tunisia’s backroom staff. The 35-year-old is fondly remembered on Wearside after joining Sunderland in January 2016 and aiding Sam Allardyce’s survival push.
He scored a free-kick in the 2-1 win over Manchester United at the Stadium of Light and delivered the corner for Lamine Kone’s late winner. He also netted a superb volley in the 3-2 victory against Chelsea in May 2016.
