Wales has become the first Fifa member association to pull its backing for Gianni Infantino’s re-election, days after the global body dropped a contentious plan to invite private investment.

The Football Association of Wales said in a statement on Monday that it had withdrawn its backing, citing failures in governance, process and leadership, adding that Infantino had lost its confidence to lead the global game and that failing to put the interests of football first was unacceptable.

Last Tuesday a plan emerged to create Fifa Forward Entreprise (FFE), a company open to private investors to run the organisation’s commercial and event operations, including the World Cup.

After firm opposition from several confederations, including UEFA, the project was withdrawn overnight between Friday and Saturday.

Infantino remains, for now, the only declared candidate for the presidency. The vote is set for March 2027 in Rabat for a four-year term.
