Reactions from both benches after Mbappe fires Real Madrid past Getafe in La Liga
"War of Words": What Alonso and Bordalas said after Real Madrid's 1-0 win over Getafe?
Real Madrid head coach Xabi Alonso admitted his team’s 1-0 win over Getafe on Sunday was far from spectacular but praised the players resilience and focus as Los Blancos extended their lead at the top of La Liga.
On the other side, Getafe boss Jose Bordalas hit out at refereeing decisions and criticised what he felt were inconsistencies in key moments of the match.
Speaking after Kylian Mbappe’s 80th-minute winner sealed the points, Alonso was honest about the nature of the contest.
"It wasn’t the most beautiful match not to watch and not to play but we enjoyed it because we had to fight, Coming to Getafe is never easy. We struggled to find rhythm and space but we leave with 3 point and that’s the most important thing" he said.
Alonso highlighted Vinicius Junior’s impact off the bench noting how the Brazilian’s pace and directness changed the momentum of the game and forced Getafe into mistakes.
"He had big influence , he provoked errors, forced cards and shifted the match in our favour" Alonso added.
The coach also praised Arda Guler’s decisive pass for the winning goal and Thibaut Courtois crucial stoppage time save while admitting the team must manage such situations better when playing with numerical advantage.
Looking ahead, Alonso turned his focus to Wednesday’s Champions League clash against Juventus:
"It was match about hard work & mentality. Now our attention moves to Juventus".
Getafe coach Jose Bordalas, meanwhile expressed frustration with the officiating particularly the 77th-minute red card shown to Allan Nyom just 30 second after coming on.
"The dismissal changed the game, Yes he raised his foot but it wasn’t violent conduct. For me it’s yellow card at most" he told Marca.
Bordalas also criticised what he perceived as inconsistent refereeing throughout the match:
"There were similar fouls from Real Madrid players that went unpunished. That’s what frustrates me".
On his sideline confrontation with Vinicius, Bordalas downplayed the incident saying the Brazilian "didn’t need to provoke" him over substitution decision. He also lamented Camara’s late missed chance which could have salvaged point.
"It’s shame. We gave everything and were competitiv but we leave empty handed. We've to pick ourselves up and keep going".
