Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has backed Arsenal to clinch the Premier League title, despite the Gunners facing a daunting run of fixtures and mounting pressure from Manchester City.
Rooney’s comments come at a crucial moment in the 2025/26 campaign. Arsenal, who have led the table for the majority of the season are going through a dip in form, having just won one game in their last five across all competitions, having lost three and drawn one.
The two defeats came in cup competitions, losing 2-1 to Southampton in the FA Cup quarter-final and 2-0 against Manchester City in the League Cup final.
They also suffered a massive set-back in the league, losing 2-1 against Bournemouth at home.
Speaking to Amazon Prime Video Sport ahead of Sunday’s massive clash between the two title rivals, Rooney admitted that while the momentum seems to have shifted toward Manchester City, he still favours Mikel Arteta’s squad to get the job done.
He said:
“Yes, it’s a massive game obviously for both clubs. I still think Arsenal will win. I think City obviously have to be perfect with all their results. Arsenal could afford to get a draw in that game as well. But I still think Arsenal will just nick it.”
The battle for the crown is set to go down the wire. Currently, Arsenal are six points ahead of City but have played one more game than Pep Guardiola’s side.
Out of the two, Arsenal have an easier run of fixtures and should be expected to see it through if they can get at least a point against City.
Man City meanwhile have no other option but to win every single game between now and the end of the season in order to remain in the title race.
