The Netherlands were held to a 1-1 draw by Scotland in Tilburg on Tuesday, in the last game of the UEFA Women’s Nations League campaign. While the Oranjeleeuwinnen were in front after just 10 minutes, Scotland equalised before the break when they capitalised on a mistake in the Dutch defence.

Reflecting on the draw, which came just days after a disappointing 4-0 loss to Germany, goalscorer Jill Roord revealed: “we’re not satisfied with this week.”

“Friday [loss against Germany] was definitely not good enough. [Today], I think we played well in the first half, in waves. We should have scored earlier. The 1-0 came fast, but the second one should have been scored. The second half was sloppy,” she told Dutch TV channel NOS Sport post-match.

It was particularly disappointing, the 28-year-old suggested, that the result came after such a promising start from the squad that looked as though it could have instilled confidence following a hefty defeat.

“I thought we started well. We created quite a lot of chances after that first goal, but the equaliser was unlucky. One counterattack, and I think that’s where we got a bit upset and lost a bit of control on the game.”

“Same goes for me personally. I was playing well in the first half. In the second half, I did not have much possession and couldn’t score that second goal.”

The Netherlands have just a month to find form, with their UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 opener against Wales set to get underway on 5th July.

“In the end it is about 5th July,” Roord said, “that we are fit and fresh. And I think we were not at the moment, this international break, but we still have time to recharge ourselves and when the preparation starts, we have to be there.”
