Wear it with pride – Newcastle United Movember tribute

As it is coming to the end of another ‘Movember’, I thought I would pay tribute to a few of the moustachioed former Newcastle United players.

For a brief period Supermac sported a tache, around about the time he had decided to get rid of his voluminous sideburns.

However, it was one of his young teammates in the 1970s, Paul Cannell, who was the ‘King of the Taches’ at St James’ Park.

Yes we had Frankie Clark with his neatly kept facial furniture, Alan Kennedy and Irving Nattrass dabbled too, but it was Cannell who stood out like an extra from ‘Viva Zapata’.

The likes of John Brownlie and John Connolly kept the trend going in the late 70s, but it wasn’t until the early 1980s that we would see another moustachioed double act.

Terry McDermott and John Trewick ran Arthur Cox’s midfield engine room and their stylish and thick Tom Selleck-like handle bars gave them a certain je ne sais quoi.

We would have to wait until 1989 for our next hero with a corker of a tache. Micky Quinn bore a canny resemblance to minor TV celebrity at the time, Bob Carolgees (of Spit the dog fame).

The moustache was going out of fashion, but Mick Quinn could walk on water at the Toon, and if he wanted a thick moustache who were we to argue.

The last real Newcastle star I can recall sporting a good moustache was Philippe Albert. What a player, what a man.

In this day and age when a lot of younger men are growing beards, I wonder if the tache can also make a sustained comeback.

I have had a thick ‘Chopper’ like moustache for many years although my daughters wish I didn’t.
