Brighton & Hove Albion held their nerve to beat Newcastle 2-1 at the Amex Stadium, with Danny Welbeck proving the match-winner in the closing stages.

It was a cagey opening, with the Magpies testing Bart Verbruggen early on. Bruno Guimarães fired wide from inside the box, and Sven Botman nodded just off target, while the Seagulls created a few half-chances but couldn’t quite break through.

Just before half-time, the hosts made their move. Georginio Rutter picked out Welbeck with a perfectly timed through ball, and the striker dinked the ball over Nick Pope to put the hosts ahead.

The Magpies finally found a way back in the 76th minute. Substitute Lewis Miley delivered a low cross, and Nick Woltemade showed some clever footwork to flick the ball into the net and level the scores. For a moment, it looked like Newcastle might snatch a point.

But Welbeck had other ideas. Eight minutes later, he collected a loose ball on the edge of the box and lashed it low into the corner to restore Brighton’s lead.

The 34-year-old’s second goal of the night sealed a precious three points for Fabian Hürzeler's side, who move up to ninth in the table, while Eddie Howe's men slip to 12th.
