Rio Ferdinand has urged former teammate Danny Welbeck to turn down a transfer to Chelsea and rejoin Manchester United.

Chelsea have made an approach to sign Welbeck from Brighton, as Xabi Alonso looks to add experience to his squad.

The West Londoners had the youngest squad in the Premier League last season by average age and Welbeck has been earmarked for a leadership role. The 35-year-old has vast Premier League experience and scored 13 league goals for the Seagulls last season, the best return of his career.

Ferdinand believes Welbeck should snub the switch, however, and has advocated a return to Old Trafford for the former Manchester United academy graduate.

While United have not, publicly at least, expressed interest at this stage, the Red Devils are considering experienced strikers to support Benjamin Sesko. Welbeck also played alongside current head coach Michael Carrick during his time in Manchester.

Writing on X, Ferdinand said: “Welbs…. Ignore + come back home! Champions League football next season in Manchester.”

Welbeck scored 29 goals in 142 games for Manchester United before leaving for Arsenal in 2015. He’s scored 90 goals in 400 games across his Premier League career.
