On an otherwise positive day for Arne Slot, the Liverpool boss was dealt the latest injury setback to hit his squad after Curtis Jones was forced off against Fulham on Saturday evening.
The Reds put a halt to a run of three consecutive defeats, thanks in large part to a terrific performance from young upstart Rio Ngumoha. The 17-year-old scored a stunning goal before being involved in the lead-up to Mo Salah’s exquisite first-touch finish at Anfield.
The victory, which ensures Liverpool will end the weekend inside the top five of the Premier League table, came at a cost, however.
Jones picked up a knock towards the end of the first half and had to be replaced by Ryan Gravenberch at the halftime break.
Slot confirmed after the final whistle that the midfielder hurt his groin and suggested he won’t be available to face Paris Saint-Germain in the second leg of the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday night.
“He felt a little bit his groin,” the Dutchman told Sky Sports. “It wasn’t in the moment, he felt it already for a few minutes so let’s hope for the best, but I’d be surprised that if a player comes off they’re available for Tuesday.
“Welcome to our season. Every time after a win or something good happens, there is always an injury following it up. But it’s a win and that’s where we should be really happy.”
Alisson Becker remains sidelined by a muscle injury, but Alexander Isak made his second appearance since recovering from a broken fibula he suffered in December. Giovanni Leoni, Wataru Endo and Conor Bradley are still out with long-term injuries.
