FC Barcelona know, at the back of their minds, that they have an important task in the summer of 2026: identifying the perfect replacement for Robert Lewandowski.

The Pole is in the final year of his contract with the Catalan club, and it looks like it will be his last. Lewandowski has done exceedingly well for Barcelona despite his advancing years. Replicating his goal output is unlikely to be easy.

One striker who has been repeatedly linked with a potential move to Barcelona next summer is Atletico Madrid star Julian Alvarez. His career has risen to the next level since his move to Spain.

In an interview with French outlet L’Equipe, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo, the 25-year-old was asked about potential Barcelona and PSG links. He said:

“In Spain, there’s a lot of talk about me and Barcelona. When I signed for Atlético last year, there was a lot of talk about Paris. It’s true that there were conversations between PSG executives and my agent—they showed interest in signing me, but it didn’t materialize. For now, I’m focused on Atlético. We’ll evaluate things at the end of the season.”

Alvarez’s words have been very carefully chosen, keeping the door open for a potential move while not giving anything away just yet. This is his second season at Atletico and it might be his last.

The Argentinian, who has already proved himself at the highest level for Atletico, will not take too long to outgrow them, if he has not already. He might want to make the step up to Barcelona or PSG.

Although a very different striker, Alvarez has what it takes to lead the line for Barcelona. Let us wait and see how things play out between the Catalan club and the South American in the coming months.
