Werder Bremen’s resurgent Scottish striker Oliver Burke is apparently set to transfer to another Bundesliga club. Multiple German footballing media outlets are currently confirming a report originating from Bremen’s Deichstube fan site. The 28-year-old is said to have passed an FC Union Berlin medical. Burke will join Union on a free.
Union seek to compensate for the recent loss of German striker Kevin Volland. Deichstube reports that Bremen’s attempts to renew with Burke proved unsuccessful due to the fact that the player wasn’t keen on accepting a 40 percent reduction in salary. Burke has started the last seven league fixtures for the Hanseaten, scoring three goals in the process.
The news surely counts as a disappointment for Bremen. In eighth place on 45 points with four league games remaining, the North Germans are considered viable candidates for Europe next season. Ole Werner’s team have won their last four Bundesliga matches and are attempting to tie down important players ahead of next season.
Bremen evidently didn’t feel as if Burke’s checkered history with the club rendered him worthy of a more lucrative contract based on short-term results. Deichstube claims that Burke rejected two offers from the SV front office before opting to move to Köpenick. Burke is due to face his future side in two weeks’ time when Bremen travel to the Stadion An der alten Försterei.
