Former Manchester United defender Wes Brown played alongside some of the most skilful players in the world during his time at Old Trafford, making him perhaps one of the most qualified pundits to weigh in on the future of flair player Marcus Rashford.

Brown was a vital cog in Sir Alex Ferguson’s United team, showcasing his versatility by playing in a number of positions across the back line. The former England international won two Champions League titles among a plethora of other trophies during his fifteen years at the club.

Brown remains a keen fan and, with a pivotal transfer window approaching, the legendary defender has a surprising opinion on where United loanee Rashford’s future should lie.

The good old days

Rashford was one of the most exciting talents to emerge from United’s academy in decades, bursting onto the scene as an eighteen-year-old when he scored a brace in the Europa League. The youngster was not done making a name for himself, though, as just days later he scored another brace on his Premier League debut against Arsenal.

From there, the England international’s career went from strength to strength as he established himself as a rising star and became one of the first names on the team sheet. Across his time at the club, Rashford made a staggering 426 appearances in which he found the back of the net 138 times and registered 79 assists, ranking him sixth on the list of United’s all-time assist leaders.

It seemed that Rashford was destined to follow in the footsteps of United legends like Gary Neville and Paul Scholes by spending his entire career at his boyhood club, but unfortunately things unfolded rather differently.

After falling out with Ruben Amorim, Rashford enjoyed a short six-month loan at Aston Villa before heading to Barcelona last summer on a season long loan deal with an optional fee attached that may or may not be triggered this summer.

A potential homecoming

During an exclusive interview, sponsored by NetBet, the legendary defender gave his thoughts on the situation. When asked whether Carrick should push to bring Rashford back to Old Trafford, he said: “I would love to see it. It’s a tough one, but I think the main thing is it’ll be different. It’s not the same manager, and I think he’s had an excellent season in Barcelona. He looks like he’s really enjoyed it.”

Expanding on the subject, Brown added: “I only think it would be a bonus. I think, you know, if you wipe the slate clean in the sense of the fallout with the manager, I think that’d be— I mean, it would what an extra player to have with the experience that he does have now. I would honestly love to see him back.”

Was Rashford judged too harshly?

Brown feels that Rashford may have been judged too harshly during his time at Old Trafford. He said: “It’s hard. I mean, everyone forget sometimes that people are human beings. And sometimes inside a football club you don’t know what goes on.”

“And, you know, the people that talk get told off for talking, the people that stay quiet, no one really knows what’s going on. So then, you know, people make their own minds up.”

Will it happen?

Though Brown would like to see the England international return to his old stomping ground, he isn’t entirely sure a return is feasible. He said: “Whether or not that happens, we’ll have to wait and see. I think they will be looking obviously into that as well, and depending on what Barcelona sort of do, you know, that’s it.”

Brown reaffirmed his desire for Rashford to return to Old Trafford by saying: “For me, it’s a great option.”
