According to Alan Nixon, the two Championship sides are both keen on signing the midfielder in the new year.

The 24-year-old’s future has been the subject of speculation this month amid his lack of game time for the Black Cats in the Premier League.

Neil was a crucial part of Régis Le Bris’ first team squad last season as the club earned promotion to the top flight through the play-offs, as he played 44 times.

However, he’s made just two substitute appearances in the league this campaign, with his most recent run out in the side coming on 18 October in the final stages of a 2-0 win against Wolves.

West Brom and Leicester eye Dan Neil

It was reported earlier in December that league leaders Coventry City are interested in a move to sign Neil in the January window.

But the Sky Blues now reportedly face competition from both Leicester and West Brom, with the two sides also taking a keen eye on the Sunderland star.

It is expected that Neil will be given a chance in the side in the coming weeks due to the Black Cats’ midfield options being reduced with players competing at AFCON.

Sunderland are understood to be reluctant to let Neil go, but the player may push for an exit in order to secure greater playing time elsewhere, as he is set to be back on the bench once players return from Morocco.

It remains to be seen if the midfielder has any preferences for where he will want to go, should he leave the Stadium of Light in the new year.

Leicester sit 13th in the table, while Ryan Mason’s side are 16th following their 1-0 loss to Hull City on Saturday.

Dan Neil could be a smart option for Leicester and West Brom

Neil proved himself as a strong, Championship calibre player during his time at Sunderland, playing regularly as the team earned Premier League promotion.

To have that experience at the age of just 24 makes him a very valuable option on the market this winter.

Leicester and West Brom could both use midfield reinforcement, and Neil is the kind of player that could bolster their respective squads.

If they can convince Sunderland to cash in this January, then that could prove a very smart piece of business, and they both should be able to provide Neil with the level of game time that he is likely seeking.
