West Bromwich Albion have been docked two points by the English Football League for breaching the Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).
The Championship club was charged with exceeding the £39 million loss limit for the three seasons to 2024-25.
The club denied the charges, but an independent club financial review panel (CFRP) found they breached the rules and recommended a two-point penalty.
West Brom responded in a statement that they ‘disagree with the CFRP’s findings’ and believe they have ‘fully complied’ with the financial rules.
The West Midlands outfit also confirmed they are considering their options and could appeal against the decision.
The sudden penalty has put the club back in contention for relegation. They have dropped from 18th to 20th place in the Championship table with two games remaining.
However, they are six points clear of 22nd-placed Oxford United, and only an unlikely set of results could push them back into the bottom three.
West Brom host promotion-chasing Ipswich Town this weekend before concluding their campaign with a visit to already-relegated Sheffield Wednesday.
The Baggies need only one more point from the final two fixtures to retain their Championship status.
They have won their previous two league matches against Preston North End and Watford, and haven’t lost in their last nine games.
