West Bromwich Albion have been docked two points with immediate effect after a Profitability and Sustainability Rules breach, cutting their Championship cushion to six with two games left.
The club said in a statement that, after a two-day hearing concluding on 23 April 2026, the EFL’s Club Financial Review Panel ruled Albion exceeded the Upper Loss Threshold for the three-year period to 30 June 2025.
Written reasons have not yet been issued. Albion dispute the findings, maintain they complied with the rules, and put the breach at under £2m, describing it as the smallest on record across the Premier League and Championship.
They attribute the breach to a recent change in the treatment of community development spending, which altered their PSR loss calculation. Affected costs include facilities, staff time and resources provided to The Albion Foundation, and the club intends to keep backing the charity.
Albion are considering options on an appeal. They also question the timing, noting accounts were filed by 31 December and the charge arrived at the end of March.
Morrison’s side had put together a nine-match unbeaten run and beat Watford on Tuesday to move eight points clear, but the deduction drags them back towards danger ahead of Saturday lunchtime’s home game against Ipswich. Albion have dropped two places.
Oxford, in the final relegation spot, are six points back and can overtake only with two wins, two Albion defeats and a six-goal swing in goal difference.
