Max O’Leary has signed a three-year contract at West Brom, but the shape of the goalkeeping unit still looks unsettled heading towards September.
According to ExpressAndStar.com, the 29-year-old impressed after arriving from Bristol City, after initially signing a short-term deal that expired this summer.
Last season began with Josh Griffiths as number one, before Ryan Mason switched to Joe Wildsmith, who struggled. Mason then recalled Griffiths for a defeat to Leicester.
Results did not improve under Eric Ramsay, notably the 5-0 loss to Norwich, after which Albion brought in O’Leary on a short-term deal. He had helped Bristol City reach the 2024/25 play-offs, then lost his spot to Manchester United loanee Radek Vitek and sought regular football.
His only glaring error came on debut at Derby, after which he produced a strong run. He kept five successive clean sheets and finished with eight shutouts in 16 league games, shining at Blues.
Some supporters remain unconvinced he is the definitive first choice, and James Morrison still has a decision to make. Griffiths, 24, has reportedly drawn interest from Stoke. His future could be elsewhere if he seeks a regular number one, he is contracted until next summer and may generate funds.
Wildsmith, 30, was released this summer. Ben Cisse and Joe Wallis, both 20, are pushing through, Cisse from West Bromwich is mulling new terms and Wallis has triggered an extension. In the under-21s, Brian Okonkwo, 20, has been offered a deal and Louis Brady, 19, has triggered an extension.
