West Brom hit with points deduction

West Bromwich Albion have been handed an immediate two-point deduction after breaching the English Football League’s financial rules, dragging them back into the relegation battle with two games remaining.
The Baggies drop from 18th to 20th in the EFL Championship table, now sitting on 50 points - just six points above the bottom three. While they had believed their recent win over Watford had secured survival, the punishment means their status in the division is no longer guaranteed.
The EFL charged the club for exceeding the permitted £39 million loss limit across the three-year period up to the 2024–25 season. Although Albion contested the charge, an independent panel ruled that the threshold had been breached and imposed a two-point penalty.
Despite the setback, James Morrison’s side remain in a strong position. One point from their final two matches should be enough to confirm safety, with a superior goal difference over the teams below them.
West Brom host promotion-chasing Ipswich Town this weekend before travelling to already-relegated Sheffield Wednesday on the final day. They also have the option to appeal the decision within the next two weeks.
