An update on West Bromwich Albion's transfer business, with reports about Torbjorn Heggem, Tom Fellows and Nectarios Triantis.
West Bromwich Albion are embarking upon a new era this season, with manager Ryan Mason having been brought in to replace Tony Mowbray in the dugout at The Hawthorns.
Mason, who was most recently a part of Ange Postecoglou’s coaching staff at Tottenham Hotspur, is taking on his first ever full-time managerial role, having previously been an interim boss at Spurs.
He replaces Mowbray, who parted company with West Brom towards the end of last season with a couple of games to go as the Baggies drifted from the top six and the play-off places in the Championship.
It has been a relatively quiet transfer window for Albion, with their only incomings being Nat Phillips arriving from Liverpool as well as fellow defender George Campbell signing from Montreal, whilst Aune Heggebo has arrived from Brann.
There has been plenty of talk throughout the window, with Isaac Price linked with a move away and Devante Cole now expected to depart the club, but not much has yet happened, and it could be a busy final few weeks of the window, especially with the sudden retirement of centre-back Kyle Bartley.
With that in mind, this is a round-up of what is currently being reported with regards to Albion, and the potential off-field distractions as the 2025/26 Championship campaign gets underway.
The last month or so has gone in a way whereby the departure of Torbjorn Heggem to Serie A side Bologna has been inevitable, but it now appears that that may not be the case.
The 26-year-old centre-back is reportedly the subject of a potential £10 million move from Bologna, who qualified for the UEFA Champions League in the 2023/24 campaign, and backed that up by qualifying for the UEFA Europa League last season.
However, as negotiations between the clubs are reportedly said to be ongoing, it has been reported that Bologna have looked at Fali Cande, of Hellas Verona, as an alternative, according to Corriere Dello Sport, via Bologna Sport News.
That is as a result of the ongoing negotiations and haggling between the two sides, and could well be ironed out, and with the retirement of Bartley, that deal being concluded sooner rather than later, whether he stays or goes, is in Albion’s best interests. It has been confirmed by Mason that Heggem will be available to play on the opening day against Blackburn Rovers.
With it having been reported that Everton have now had a couple of bids rejected for Southampton winger Tyler Dibling, it is also said that both Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are now interested in the Saints youngster.
As a result, Saints are apparently keen on striking a deal with West Brom for the Baggies’ own England U21 international winger, Tom Fellows, who was excellent in the Championship last season with no player providing more assists in the second-tier.
As it stands, Saints are still awaiting for a club to meet their demands for Dibling and Fellows is viewed as a replacement for him, so without the departure of Dibling, a move for Fellows may well be unlikely.
Fellows has been linked with a move to Everton in the past, but it does seem as though, at least for the time being, a move to the Premier League is not currently on the cards.
It is not just outgoing business that is being speculated on at West Brom, with it also suggested that the club are interested in signing Sunderland’s Nectarios Triantis.
According to a report that was published in the Chronicle, initially reported by Mackem News, West Brom are one of a number of clubs lining up a move for Triantis.
Earlier in the summer, Sydney-born Triantis had been the subject of interest from Hibernian, according to Alan Nixon via his Patreon, where he has spent the last 18 months on loan from the Stadium of Light.
The 22-year-old Australia U23 international defensive midfielder, who can play in defence, joined the Black Cats from the Central Coast Mariners in 2023. It has been reported that any move for Triantis from Albion would be a loan deal.
