The Hammers saw a 14-season stay in the top-flight of English football ended in painful fashion on the final day of the 2025/26 campaign despite a 3-0 home win over Leeds.

Nuno Espirito Santo’s team needed such a victory to be coupled with a helping hand from former boss David Moyes, whose Everton side travelled to relegation rivals Tottenham.

Spurs’ vastly superior goal difference meant that a draw would have been enough to secure their Premier League survival even in the event of a West Ham victory, though they ended up winning themselves thanks to a late first-half effort from Joao Palhinha.

West Ham - who accrued the most amount of points (39) of any relegated team in the last 15 years - now return to the Championship for the first time since 2012 and just three seasons after winning the Conference League, a dismal end to an appalling season as fans continued to express their anger at the club’s board.

In an official statement posted following their relegation, West Ham said: “The confirmation of our relegation from the Premier League today marks a sad and painful moment for West Ham United.

“The Club wishes to sincerely thank every single one of our supporters for the constant and loyal backing they have given, throughout what has been an extremely difficult and disappointing season.

“Ultimately, we have not repaid that support. The plain truth is that we have not been good enough. We must now face the consequences of that failure with honesty, transparency and a determination to repair, refocus and rebuild.

“West Ham United is a football club whose unique identity is defined not by success or failure on the pitch, but by the values and traditions of our roots in east London, and by the spirit of the people who have Claret and Blue in their hearts.

“The Club acknowledges how challenging this season has been for them and knows it must take steps to restore a sense of pride, faith and belief.

“As we have done before, we will fight with everything we have to return to the top division of English football at the first time of asking. The hard work to make that goal a reality begins immediately.”

West Ham fans have staged multiple protests this season against the club’s ownership and their disillusionment is only escalating following a disastrous relegation.

“We sold our soul, for this s***hole,” many chanted in the home end at the London Stadium on Sunday.

Apologising to supporters after their demotion was confirmed, manager Nuno Espirito Santo said: “It’s a moment of deep sadness for all of us at the club.

“It was a tough day, we had a tough mission, we lost the privilege of deciding our own future.

“If you ask me now about the past and the future, I don’t think it’s the best days to understand the moment of sadness of our fans, of ourselves, of the club, and apologise and thank them for all of the support they gave us.

“It was a strange season in terms of points, normally 39 I think in the last 10 years or so has given the teams enough to keep safe. We improved, but it’s not enough.”
