West Ham United have made their interest known in defender Axel Disasi, according to L’Equipe. The Hammers have begun discussions with Chelsea to sign him.
West Ham are battling to climb out of the relegation zone and need all the help they can get. They have turned to the 27-year-old Frenchman to reinforce the rearguard.
Interestingly, he was close to moving to the London Stadium this summer, but a move fell through. The Hammers are now looking to revive a potential loan deal.
West Ham’s defensive woes are well-documented. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side has conceded the most goals in the Premier League this term (45).
Clean sheets are a rarity for the East London outfit, with the manager struggling to find the right balance at centre-half.
Konstantinos Mavropanos and Jean-Clair Todibo have been sensational over the last few games, but throwing in another reliable body in there will bolster Nuno’s options for the run-in.
However, this is where West Ham should pause and seriously reassess. Disasi would be a baffling target, not a solution.
There is a reason he has spent this season with Chelsea’s reserves rather than pushing for minutes in a defence that has rotated heavily all season.
While he is physically imposing and dominant in the air, those strengths are undermined by persistent issues in reading the game.
Disasi struggles to judge defensive space, is slow to react to second balls, and looks particularly vulnerable when dragged wide into channels.
That last point is a fatal flaw in a league that relentlessly targets centre-backs in isolation.
For a side already leaking goals, adding a defender who compounds positional problems feels reckless.
Chelsea themselves have multiple centre-halves West Ham could explore, each offering better awareness and composure.
If you’re shopping from Chelsea’s excesses, why settle for the weakest option of the bunch?
