West Ham United continued their miserable start to the 2025/26 season with yet another defeat on home soil, losing 2-0 to Brentford in Monday night’s London derby.
It’s been a month since the Hammers decided to pull the plug on Graham Potter, but his successor, Nuno Espirito Santo, is struggling to steer the club away from danger.
The Portuguese tactician has now lost two of his opening three Premier League games as West Ham head coach (D1), stretching the Hammers’ winless streak to five games in a row (D1, L4).
Goals on either side of half-time from Igor Thiago and Mathias Jensen were enough to condemn West Ham to their sixth Premier League defeat in eight games (W1, D1).
Interestingly, it was Brentford’s first win away from home, but it also extended West Ham’s miserable home record this season.
West Ham were woeful on the night, and the 2-0 scoreline flattered the hosts’ massively underwhelming performance, making it clear that Nuno has plenty of work to do moving forward.
Monday’s defeat saw West Ham set an unwanted Premier League record to rub salt on their wounds.
The Hammers have now lost their opening four league games of the season on home soil for the first time in the Premier League and the club’s entire history.
They have lost each of those four games by a combined scoreline of 12-2 (5-1 vs Chelsea, 3-0 vs Tottenham Hotspur, 2-1 vs Crystal Palace, and 2-0 vs Brentford).
West Ham have now taken just four points from their opening eight games, marking their worst start to a season in their Premier League history.
The defeat against Brentford leaves West Ham rooted in the bottom three, just one place and two points above bottom-feeders Wolverhampton Wanderers.
West Ham’s four points have come away from home, beating Nottingham Forest at City Ground and holding Everton to a 1-1 draw at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
They face another tricky fixture against newly promoted Leeds United next weekend and will hope to get back to winning ways at Elland Road.
