Reports from The Sun put Josh Sargent firmly on West Ham United’s radar as January edges closer, while the club weighs possible changes up front amid growing doubts over Niclas Fullkrug’s future. As results dip, Nuno Espirito Santo looks for a striker who can settle quickly, so the club now looks beyond its current options.

West Ham’s plan:

At present, Fullkrug and Callum Wilson are struggling to offer a consistent threat, so the manager keeps pushing for a different type of forward. On the other hand, the club have tied its recruitment plans to possible departures. As things stand, talk around Andrea Pinamonti, Santiago Gimenez, and Promise David keeps doing the rounds, yet the Sargent rumour is gaining the most traction as the forward is posting steady Championship performances.

West Ham scouts are keeping a close eye on the Norwich City forward, and although six league goals hardly jump off the page, his comfort with English football still counts for plenty.

On top of that, Norwich have set a £15 million asking price, and West Ham see that figure as manageable if player sales open space.

Ultimately, a return to the Premier League could appeal to Sargent, and if discussions move forward, West Ham may see him as a practical option rather than a statement signing, especially as they try to stay clear of deeper trouble this season.

Will he be a good signing for the Hammers?

Josh Sargent feels like a sensible fit for West Ham because the club needs dependability more than flair right now, and his profile matches that situation well. After several overseas forwards struggled to adapt, West Ham now favours players who already know the English game, so Sargent’s Championship form and physical presence quickly stand out.

He works hard off the ball, holds his own in duels, and keeps defenders occupied, which suits games that turn messy and nerve-racking. Last season at Norwich showed he can score when a team sets up to suit him, and that record brings a measure of comfort. Still, questions remain because his previous Premier League spell failed to gain momentum, and injuries have repeatedly broken his flow.

Even so, West Ham face an immediate issue rather than a sweeping rebuild, so they need someone who can make an impact without delay. If Nuno Espirito Santo defines Sargent’s role clearly and keeps him fit, the move looks sensible, steady, and capable of helping the club move away from danger.
