West Ham continued their fine form in the women’s League Cup on Wednesday night, with a demolition job leaving manager Rehanne Skinner lost for words.

The Hammers put five past Southampton to all but seal their spot in the knockouts.

Five star West Ham crush Southampton

There was simply no stopping West Ham against the Saints this week as after a goalless first half they came to life after the break.

Rehanne Skinner’s side scored five goals in the second half courtesy of Ffion Morgan and braces from Viviane Asseyi and Shekiera Martinez.

Speaking after the game, Skinner gave a glowing review of her team’s flawless performance.

“I think it’s definitely one that we’ve been waiting for, just the way that we were so clinical in front of goal.” Skinner said. “I think the quality of every goal was just so high as well at key moments.

“I think in the first half, we did a lot of hard work to manage the game, to get ourselves in front in terms of the performance. And then the goals in the second half were outstanding.”

Goals for the Hammers have been few and far between in the league this season, but they haven’t had such problems when it comes to the cup.

While they have struggled in the WSL – still without a win after eight games – the League Cup has been West Ham’s bread and butter this season.

“The group that started the game did a really good job of grinding Southampton down.” Skinner continued. “And then the players that came on and had an impact, and that created some unbelievable chances, and we’ve taken them.”

What next for West Ham?

Up next for West Ham in the League Cup is Portsmouth and all they need to guarantee a spot in the knockouts is a draw.

If they do make it to the knockout stages, things will get a lot harder for the Hammers very fast.

The League Cup format means that Champions League teams in England don’t enter the competition until the quarter finals.

Before they can focus on the Cup, West Ham need to try and pick up more points in the league as they stare down the barrel at a relegation battle.

Skinner’s team plays Everton this weekend in another important game on Sunday.
