Liverpool registered their first win of the season in the Barclays Women’s Super League by defeating Tottenham Hotspur 2-0 at BrewDog Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Mia Enderby struck twice at the death as The Reds finally recorded a league win at the 13th attempt.

When speaking to the media after the match, Liverpool boss Gareth Taylor expressed his delight with the result, although he admits that there is still work to do between now and the end of the season.

“Week-after-week, it was such a big thing [to try and find a win],” Taylor said. “This group of players are really good to work with. The reset from either defeat or draw has been really quick and really positive and I love that about the girls. I think confidence levels will be so much better.

“Of course, we won the game late on today, but we created a lot in the second half. We had a lot of good opportunities, good chances, lots of box entries and I think that’s what we’ve been lacking this season.

“I’m really pleased for the players and for everyone connected, but we know we’ve still got a lot of work to do.”

Taylor also gave some insight into Spurs’ style of play, commenting that his own side were able to cause problems through some power and pace.

He said “They’re very good at how they try to build-up in overload in the midfield areas. It looks very similar from their goal kicks and they do it well. They were a little bit loose when they broke through that; I thought that they were a bit wasteful and passes going astray.

“They are a good team. Sometimes, teams have the right to break your press. I felt in terms of the way we built, they were very aggressive, wanting to jump. We had to probably be a bit more direct than we would usually be just because they were so aggressive that they can’t cover all of the spaces. If they really come to you this way, you know the spaces are beyond and with the likes of Alice [Bergström], Ceri [Holland], we’ve got powerful and quick players that are really capable of hurting oppositions.”

Liverpool signed experienced midfielder Denise O’Sullivan last weekend and the player has already made her mark on the team. Taylor summarised the qualities that O’Sullivan has brought with her to Merseyside.

He said “She’s bought quality on the pitch. I think that she’s a leader in a way which is really encouraging, particularly to young players. You can tell [her] exactly what you want from her and she brings it. If she’s not sure, she’ll ask questions. I think that’s quite a tough game for her to go into today, but she will improve being with us. I think she’s a really good addition. I think about getting that amount of experience in the January window.”

Liverpool are next in action when they travel to The Progress with Unity Stadium to face Manchester United on Sunday.
