David Prutton has claimed that Chris Wilder has unfinished business with Sheffield United following confirmation of his return.

The 57-year-old has come back for a third stint in charge of the Blades, replacing Ruben Selles as manager just five games into the new Championship season.

Wilder left Bramall Lane last summer after guiding the club to a play-off final that they lost 2-1 to Sunderland after a third place finish in the second division table.

Sheffield United owners, COH Sports, made the decision to change managers just six months after taking over the side, but have now gone back to Wilder following a disastrous start to the new campaign.

The Blades are the only club in the second division still on zero points, leaving them bottom of the table.

David Prutton claims unfinished business for Chris Wilder at Sheffield United

Prutton believes that Wilder has a passion for the club that makes him a perfect fit for Bramall Lane, as he understands what makes it a unique member of the EFL.

He’s claimed that the veteran coach has unfinished business with the Yorkshire outfit following their record points tally for a side that didn’t get promoted last season.

“Given what he got out of that side last season, the record-breaking points tally — yes there was a deduction — that would normally get you automatically into the Premier League wasn’t enough, and then they quite brutally got rid of him in the summer,” said Prutton, via Sky Sports.

“A change of direction is what they were after.

“To sound a bit cynical, they got it but in the completely the wrong direction.

“Sometimes it is not necessarily about one man that can do it on the pitch with the players he has got, it is about the feel of the place.

Sheffield United, I feel, are a unique football club.

“There is a real identity with it.

“Sheffield has got a real identity as a city.

“Sometimes football isn’t about tactics and philosophies, it’s about passion and pride and what you’ve got in your heart and Chris certainly does have that about Sheffield United.

“Given what he has done, he certainly has unfinished business there.”

Sheffield United’s disastrous season

Sheffield United lost to Sunderland in the play-off final last May and opted to replace Wilder with Selles as a consequence.

It was hoped that the Spaniard could help bridge that gap to the top two and guide the club to promotion back to the top flight.

However, five defeats from their opening five league games left the team bottom of the table when Selles was dismissed.

Wilder’s first game back in charge will come on 20 September with a home clash against Charlton Athletic in a 3pm kick-off.

Chris Wilder’s return will be welcomed by supporters

Wilder coming back 14 or so weeks after being dismissed is not a good sign for the new Sheffield United owners.

However, supporters will likely welcome the 57-year-old back given what he’s done for the club across his two previous stints.

He guided the Blades to promotion to the Premier League in 2019, and the team came very close to repeating that feat again in the previous campaign.
