A lot has been going on behind the scenes at Bayern Munich, and Max Eberl is at the centre-stage once again.
Eberl divided opinions among the fans after some dubious decisions in the summer window, but the 52-year-old has proved that most of his decisions were vindicated.
Luis Diaz has been arguably one of the signings of the season in entire Europe, while the decision to not continue with Nicolas Jackson appears to be a smart one.
Eberl can also a big credit for convincing Dayot Upamecano to sign a new long-term contract at Bayern earlier this year.
However, not everything is as rosy as it seems. Christian Falk has told CFBayern that Eberl needs to prove that he is still the right man for the job.
In recent weeks, Eberl has been linked with a move to Saudi Pro League side, Al-Ittihad.
However, such rumours are wide of the mark. Falk told CFB that the rumors from Saudi Arabia are incorrect.
Eberl only presented his transfer and squad plans for the summer to the Bayern supervisory board on Monday and is already preparing for the upcoming season. A decision regarding his contract, which expires in 2027, will be made at the supervisory board meeting in August.
The Bild journalist said:
No decision has been made on Max Eberl’s future. He has to show that he’s the right man for the job in the upcoming summer transfer window, and then there will be a definitive decision made in August. Following that, the supervisory board will hold another meeting in which they’ll decide whether the 52-year-old will get another contract or not. If he doesn’t, the relationship could end extremely quickly – after all, no one wants to be a lame duck!
But remember: Eberl was the man who brought Vincent Kompany to the club – and that’s proven to be the best decision Bayern have made in recent years. Everyone believes this inside the club. Bayern’s director of sport also brought in Luis Diaz (at a time when there wasn’t absolute certainty that this deal would work out), who’s had a fantastic 2025/26 season. I think Liverpool fans will know more than anyone what was lost last summer! He also brought in Michael Olise, and Tom Bischof will be a key player next term. So you can comfortably say he’s made plenty of good decisions, but now Max Eberl has to show that he doesn’t always have to pay the highest price for signings, and he has to sell some players. These will be the factors that help the supervisory board make their decision.
