Mark Stott has taken Stockport County on a journey so far, and he isn’t done yet

There is no denying that Mark Stott is one of the most important figures in Stockport County’s modern history.

The local businessman bought the club in January 2020, while still in the National League, the fifth tier of English football, and has built the club up to League One primarily from his own pocket.

When taking over, he had a plan to take the Hatters from that level to the Championship in seven years, and while that seemed slightly outlandish at the time, he’s currently on course to achieve it.

But where did Stott make his millions, and what is his net worth?

Growing up in nearby Poynton, he started life selling advertising space in a local newspaper, trading used cars, owning a bar and running a small software business.

After exploring those various avenues, to varying degrees of success, Stott hit upon the industry that would make him an incredibly wealthy man: property.

He founded Select Property Group and Vita Group – the latter being County’s front-of-shirt sponsor – which between them supply a significant portion of student accommodation in this country (Vita) and deal with property investments in Dubai, Shanghai and Hong Kong (Select).

His precise personal net worth is not publicly known, but just Select Property Group alone surpassed £3bn in sales last year.

While that will be a figure some way above his own personal earnings, it gives an idea of the scale of business interests he has.

Just last year, according to football finance Kieran Maguire, Stott put a fresh £11m into County, which takes total losses since his takeover to £21m, which is essentially all money covered from his own pocket – another sign of his level of wealth.

Mark Stott has a number of other interests

Another key aspect of the Stott empire is that it never stands still: there is always a new idea or venture just around the corner.

Most recently, that has taken the form of Stott’s investment in Hungarian first division side Debreceni VSC.

In a statement to fans on County’s website, the owner confirmed that the two clubs will operate “entirely independently”, to rule out any thoughts that this may be Stott starting a multi-club system.

The same statement confirmed that through his company, Stott Capital, he has also acquired the F2 media platform, including their YouTube channel, to help build Pro Football Academy, which started in Stockport and has bases across the UK, Spain, Dubai and in Miami, aiming to develop “the next generation of ballers” through their coaching academies.

Stockport County can rely on Mark Stott’s backing for years to come

All these moves around and outside of County, first of all, display the kind of funds he has access to, but may also give the impression of Stott as a mobile businessman prone to move towards other interests.

His statement about the Debreceni takeover poured cold water over any such thoughts.

The seven-year plan, formulated with County CEO Simon Wilson, is due to expire in January 2027, but Stott confirmed in that statement that the board at Edgeley Park are already drawing up a new five-year plan, which would presumably earmark the owner to stay with the club until at least 2032.

The first plan, while not yet achieving the primary aim of reaching the Championship, as been an unmistakable success.

From a non-league outfit, Stott has built the club up to be undoubtedly one of the strongest teams in League One, with a real chance of promotion at the end of the 2025/26 season.

That will be the last chance to reach the second tier inside the seven years, but even if it doesn’t come off, there is a sense around the place that things are heading in the right direction, and if it doesn’t happen in 2026, it certainly will do soon.

Already, Stott and his right-hand man, Wilson, will go down in County history as two of the most important figures in recent years, thanks primarily to the former’s heavy investment, and it seems there is still more to come from the local hero.
