Sunderland fans are getting excited.

Their team currently top of the Championship.

In truth, it looks a pretty shocking standard this season in the second tier.

You have Burnley, Leeds and Sheffield United as the closest challengers and all three of these have lost pretty much all their best players after relegation from the Premier League.

Indeed, Sunderland fans saw their only team lose its star player, Jack Clarke joining Ipswich. An Ipswich team that still have no wins after nine PL games and Sunderland’s former star player struggling even to get a game, starting only three times so far.

Luton, Burnley and Sheffield United instantly went back down last season, having been promoted in 2022/23, with every chance the same will happen this season to those promoted from the Championship earlier this year. The only plausible exception maybe Leicester, who have a lot of Premier League proven players in their squad, having had the resources to do so AND escaping PSR punishment (so far) on a technicality.

Back to Sunderland fans though and they are especially excited, due to now finding themselves the closest they have got to Newcastle United in the best part of a decade.

The Mackems only nine places below Newcastle United, who are currently 12th in the Premier League on Monday morning.

Which then brings me to the real point of this article.

As Newcastle United fans, we all have a right to have our own opinions on our club, our team, our manager and so on.

So long as we agree on supporting our football team/club, then it doesn’t matter what we otherwise agree or disagree on. It is just opinions, there is no absolute right or wrong.

I want you to consider this though.

What would Sunderland fans now like to see happen at Newcastle United?

This to me, helps me very much decide what is the best thing for Newcastle United. As in, whatever Sunderland fans would like to see happen at NUFC, then actually the exact opposite of that is the best thing where Newcastle United are concerned.

Newcastle United fans turning on their team, on individual players, gets them out dancing on the streets of Pennywell.

Whilst the absolute ultimate that would see spontaneous street parties down on Wearside, would be if the Newcastle United owners were for whatever reason daft enough to sack Eddie Howe.

Despite their infantile inane comments online, Sunderland fans know fine well that Eddie Howe is an excellent manager.

They also know that we have a core of excellent Newcastle United players who will come good, once we start taking our chances and other fine margins and luck come our way once again.

Sunderland fans would love it, love it, if NUFC imploded and the Newcastle fans turned on the manager who has created something special and laid the foundations for the years ahead.
