With Gennaro Gattuso all set to sign for Lazio, the fans are left to wonder what to expect from the former battling midfielder.
After parting ways with Maurizio Sarri, the Biancocelesti have secured an agreement with the Calabrian head coach, who has been unattached since leaving the Italian national team after failing to guide them to the World Cup. The 48-year-old will arrive in the capital next week to sign his Lazio contract.
Il Corriere dello Sport revealed the broad outlines of Gattuso’s plans at Formello. The new manager is expected to initially confirm Sarri’s 4-3-3 formation, although his system could be easily tweaked into his favorite 4-2-3-1.
But unlike the conservative, defence-oriented playing style deployed by his predecessor in his second Lazio tenure, the AC Milan legend is planning to implement a more dynamic, proactive brand of football. The main characteristics outlined are a high defensive line, fast pace, and an aggressive approach. Simply put, Gattuso wants a band of players willing to take risks and fight for every ball.
The Roman newspaper reveals that Lazio president Claudio Lotito and the club’s sporting director Angelo Fabiani have promised the incoming coach four or five new signings to bolster the squad. Nevertheless, Gattuso believes he already has key players to build the squad around, especially his captain, Mattia Zaccagni, and the midfield duo of Nicolo Rovella and Kenneth Taylor.
The former Milan and Napoli boss is also hoping to keep the defensive duo of Mario Gila and Alessio Romagnoli, but it remains to be seen if he can convince them to stay for another year.
