The German national team ended its group stage at the World Cup with a 1-2 loss to Ecuador. Manuel Neuer, in particular, is increasingly coming under fire following the match. Fans and experts are questioning the Bayern goalkeeper’s return.

The DFB squad suffered a setback in its final group stage match at the World Cup. Despite taking an early lead, the team led by head coach Julian Nagelsmann lost 1–2 to Ecuador, exposing weaknesses in nearly every area of the team.

Manuel Neuer, in particular, became the center of discussion after the match. The 40-year-old did not look good on either goal and subsequently faced sharp criticism.

Neuer was unlucky on both goals

Neuer already looked hesitant when Angulo equalized. The Bayern Munich goalkeeper waited too long to come off his line and was ultimately unable to prevent the goal.

The 2014 World Cup champion also didn’t look good on the decisive 1-2 goal by Gonzalo Plata. Neuer reached into thin air and was once again a step too late.

Added to this were several coordination issues with Bayern teammate Jonathan Tah, which meant the German defense as a whole did not look solid.

One statistic also stands out: After three group stage matches, Neuer has already conceded four goals. The Bayern captain let in one goal each against Curaçao and the Ivory Coast, and now two more were added against Ecuador.

Experts give poor grades

The media’s verdict was similarly critical. Several major sports publications, including kicker, BILD, and SPORT1, gave Neuer’s performance a failing grade.

In particular, his positioning on the goals conceded and his lack of presence in the penalty area were criticized.

The discussion is made even more contentious because Oliver Baumann had put in solid performances during World Cup qualifying and in the friendly matches leading up to the tournament, before national team coach Julian Nagelsmann named Neuer as the starting goalkeeper shortly before the World Cup.

Fans are questioning Neuer’s comeback

The Bayern goalkeeper’s comeback is now also the subject of heated debate on social media.

Especially those fans who were already critical of Neuer’s return before the tournament feel vindicated after the first three group stage matches.

One user on Platform X wrote: “Can someone explain again why Manuel Neuer absolutely had to be at the World Cup after what was, statistically speaking, an average season? Where’s his so-called aura?”

Another user questioned the goalkeeper’s charisma, which Nagelsmann has repeatedly emphasized: “Manuel Neuer isn’t even the best goalkeeper at Bayern. He has no business being in the DFB goal. I don’t see any of that ‘aura’ Nagelsmann is always talking about. To me, Neuer is more of a liability than a game-changer. His time is up.”

Despite the mounting criticism, there’s currently little to suggest that Julian Nagelsmann will reconsider his goalkeeper decision.

The national team coach had emphasized several times before the tournament that he was counting on Neuer’s experience, leadership qualities, and presence. Especially in the knockout matches, the 2014 World Cup champion is expected to provide the team with additional stability.

However, his performance against Ecuador will further fuel the debate. One thing is clear: If Neuer slips up again in the knockout stage, the discussion about his return is likely to intensify significantly once more.
