Brian Sorensen admits he and his Everton squad are not happy with their position in the Barclays Women’s Super League table.
But he adds that they have also been the victims of bad luck – with a plethora of injuries contributing to their run of results.
“No, we’re not happy with where we are on the table for sure, but sometimes there’s stuff you can’t control,” he said in a press conference on Thursday morning. “If you look at the injuries we had, it’s much more than any other teams – key figures out and so on.
“But that’s the fact we have to try to deal with, and then at the same time building a team – and I think the progress has been good.
“Results-wise, yeah, not.
“But I can see the team is believing what we’re doing and they’re working extremely hard on the pitch. The staff is working extremely hard to make sure that the players are ready and available. So it will come. It will come.
“I said before the season, we need consistency and we haven’t had that at all. So it’s also been me figuring out the new players: where do they fit in well, how do they complement each other and all of that. It is hard when you get nine new players in, and seven, eight of them [are] basically starting straight away. So that’s been more challenging than I potentially expected.
“We are where we are and we just have to keep grinding out some wins and hopefully that will come.”
Everton lost narrowly 2-1 to Manchester City last weekend. The Toffees are currently tenth in the table, four points ahead of local rivals Liverpool.
And he added that bottom-of-the-table West Ham United, their opponents this weekend, have had a similar experience so far this season.
“It’s just small margins to get a win. They should have won this game against Leicester at the weekend. We should have won that game against Leicester when we played them. It’s these really small, small margins that you have to get on your side.
“I think they’re a good team. I think they have a front three that are very, very good – can’t totally figure out why they haven’t been scoring more goals. They scored a lot yesterday in the [Subway Women’s League Cup] and the previous game they had in the Cup, so those players can find a way to the goals and we know that.
“So it’s about being ready for the challenge and of course they will do everything they can to get a win where we’ll do the same.
“I hope it’s going to be an exciting game, but I could also imagine there’ll be a bit of nerves from both teams because there’s a lot on the line.”
