The former Wolverhampton Wanderers defender has revealed his reasons for joining the recently promoted Red Dragons
New Wrexham defender Conor Coady has revealed his reasons for joining the recently promoted side.
The centre-back joined the Red Dragons from Leicester City at the beginning of the month, in a deal believed to be worth £2m.
He followed the signings of former Serie A left-back Liberato Cacace and ex-Nottingham Forest man Lewis O’Brien, before the club went and added Kieffer Moore to their ranks.
Coady spoke to Sky Sports ahead of his first competitive appearance for Wrexham against Southampton.
Asked for his reasons for joining Wrexham, Coady stated: “First and foremost, I think what the club’s done over the past few years, how they’ve approached League One and League Two, and obviously jumping from the National League as well.
“We’ve all kind of jumped on board with it, haven’t we? We’ve all seen the documentary, all these sorts of things.
“But I just think how the boys played, and how they’ve approached the last few seasons, has been fantastic.”
Coady hasn’t had to do all his learning about the club from the outside, however, revealing how crucial his own chats with officials at the club were in making up his mind.
Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson has been with the club since the National League, and has dragged them all the way to England’s second tier.
He has 141 Championship games as a manager on his CV, but has a points-per-game rate of just 0.82 – his worst record in any league by some distance – and is much more associated with League One.
That may have created some fears about the calibre of player he could attract at Wrexham’s new level, but Coady, a Premier League regular and former England international, put any such notion to bed when he described his talks with Parkinson as a motivating factor to move.
Coady continued: “Listen, I had conversations with the manager before I signed here, I had conversations with the football club, and it’s just something really, really exciting for me to be a part of.”
Asked by former Wrexham defender Ben Tozer whether Coady might take some time to assess his new surroundings before trying to stamp his elite-level authority on the club, the latter ensured he’s not minded to wait around.
“We haven’t got time to wait,” Coady stated. “We haven’t got time to sit on things. I’ve come here to be a huge part of it, I’ve come here to win.
“The club’s in a fantastic place, it’s got brilliant, brilliant people here, and I’m just here to add to it.
“I’m really enjoying it. I’ll add everything that I can do; my experience, being a leader, but also trying to perform on the pitch for the supporters and the boys around me.”
“I just can’t wait to be a part of it now going forward.”
The signing of Coady marks the massive leap Wrexham have made over the past few years since the takeover of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney.
To hear a player of his standard – who doesn’t really need the additional exposure the club will provide, often offered as a reason for players joining – speak so passionately about the project will be music to the ears of Red Dragons’ fans.
