Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick has provided an insight into the reasoning behind his decision not to afford a starting berth to Dani Olmo in the club’s most recent outing.

Barcelona were of course back in action on Saturday night, in a La Liga meeting with Las Palmas.

The aforementioned Olmo was for his part forced to make do with a spot on the bench from the off in Gran Canaria, before ultimately being introduced to the fray at half-time.

And to say that the 26-year-old went on to make his impact felt would be something of an understatement…

Olmo, in fact, completely altered the course of the game, the Spanish international’s clever runs and ability on the half turn having left Las Palmas’ stars chasing shadows time and again.

Not only that, but Olmo notched the opening goal, en route to a 2-0 Blaugrana triumph.

Speaking to the media on the back of the full-time whistle last night, it therefore came as little surprise when Hansi Flick was questioned on why exactly his midfield standout did not start the fixture.

And Barcelona’s headmaster went on to highlight Olmo’s recent fitness troubles, in explaining:

“Because he has been injured. The other players are probably at a higher level in terms of fitness. Dani is important, we have to give him minutes to adapt.”
