France cruised through the 2026 World Cup group stage with nine points and a tournament-best goal difference of +8. They will face Sweden in the last 32 on 30 June, 23:00, even though the Scandinavians progressed as the second-ranked third-placed team.
According to L'Équipe, the 48-team format sends the top two from each of 12 groups plus the eight best third-placed sides into the last 32. To map this, FIFA pre-set 495 possible bracket combinations before the tournament.
As Group I winners, France were assigned to meet a third-placed team from Groups C, D, F, G or H. In this case it is the third from Group F, Sweden.
The eight third-placed qualifiers came from Groups B, D, E, F, I, J, K and L, which corresponds to combination number 67 on FIFA’s template. On that line, the Group I winner faces the Group F third, while Paraguay, third in Group D, meet Germany, winners of Group E.
This system also keeps a group winner out of the same half of the draw as their runner-up, so they cannot meet again before the final. If the third from their group advances, a rematch cannot happen before the quarter-finals.
Under the previous 32-team World Cup, there were no best thirds and last-16 ties simply paired group winners with runners-up from neighbouring groups.
