A fresh account has shed light on why academy playmaker Isco failed to break through at Valencia under Unai Emery.

According to La Comarcal, Salvador Gomar, president of the Valencian football federation, recalled a conversation between then-president Manuel Llorente and Emery in which Llorente urged him to pick Isco because everyone was asking for it.

Isco’s emergence came in 2010. That Emery side included Mata, Joaquín, Soldado, Banega and Aduriz. In a Copa del Rey tie with Logroñés, he and Paco Alcácer debuted in the return leg at Mestalla, the malagueño scoring twice, one a slaloming finish.

Supporters quickly saw echoes of David Silva, but Emery did not persist with him. The youngster left that summer for Málaga after his release clause was paid.

In the exchange, Emery is said to have told Llorente his new contract depended on Champions League qualification, asking what the club preferred, playing Isco or reaching the Champions League, and requesting control of team selection.

Isco then joined Málaga and later Real Madrid.
