Leeds United’s Welsh quartet will not head back to Thorp Arch early this week despite Wales’ World Cup play-off semi-final defeat on penalties, as a second match is scheduled in this international window.
According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, the Welsh FA set out in December that, if beaten by Bosnia & Herzegovina, Wales would instead play a friendly on Tuesday, with teams required to play twice during an international break.
In Cardiff, Ethan Ampadu captained the side against Bosnia & Herzegovina, with club-mates Karl Darlow, Joe Rodon and Daniel James also starting. James struck a stunning 51st-minute effort from 30 yards to put Wales ahead.
Darlow then saved superbly from Ermedin Demirovic before Edin Dzeko flicked in a corner with four minutes left. It finished 1-1 after 90 and 120 minutes, and Neco Williams and Brennan Johnson missed in the shootout.
The outcome ends Wales’ World Cup bid, and the Leeds contingent remain on international duty. Darlow, Ampadu and Rodon all completed 120 minutes on Thursday.
