Sunderland have an option to buy following Lutsharel Geertruida’s loan from RB Leipzig. Despite a standout Man Utd display, he is viewed as likely to leave this summer, with the situation to be assessed after the campaign.
Sky Sports in Germany reported he would depart and return to RB Leipzig this summer, most likely then moving on permanently.
It is considered highly unlikely Sunderland activate the clause, understood to be around £20 million. The loan has been a success, with 28 appearances across positions and leadership that helped Sunderland meet and then exceed their primary goal.
He is not a clear first choice in one role. His strongest positions are right back or right centre-back, where Nordi Mukiele has excelled and Dan Ballard, on a new long-term deal, has been outstanding.
Recruitment focus may tilt left, with Omar Alderete and Reinildo strong but Dennis Cirkin out of contract and depth light. On the right, Trai Hume offers further cover and has played more Premier League minutes than any other Sunderland outfield player this season.
At 26 this summer and used to regular starts, Geertruida has major international ambitions and may seek guaranteed minutes. Committing that fee would consume a chunk of Sunderland’s budget, yet passing on the clause risks losing clear Premier League quality without an easy replacement.
