Manchester United skipper Bruno Fernandes may be gathering accolades after a record-breaking season, but fans will be worried about his uncertain future. The Portuguese magnifico will enter the final year of his contract with the Red Devils this summer and is yet to sign a new deal.

The Premier League giants are preparing for an eventful transfer window during which the midfield is likely to be at the forefront of their plans. United are looking to fill the boots of the outgoing Casemiro and possibly Manuel Ugarte, who could also leave in the coming weeks.

Recent reports suggest Atalanta’s Ederson is a step away from arriving at Old Trafford, while Mateus Fernandes is also on the Red Devils’ agenda. The English giants are likely to bank on their Premier League-proven strategy this summer, which has yielded so much success in the recently concluded campaign.

Understandably, these are exciting times for United supporters, who can look ahead to the future with cautious optimism. However, fans will also hope that Fernandes continues to play a starring role in the team for years to come.

United’s Portuguese talisman

Fernandes has been United’s creator-in-chief since leaving Sporting to arrive at the Theatre of Dreams in January 2020. However, the Portuguese has taken his game to a higher level this season.

Fernandes has registered nine goals and 22 assists in 37 appearances across all competitions, including a record-breaking 21 assists in the Premier League.

A recent report relayed by The Peoples Person stated that United have already initiated the process to tie Fernandes down to a new deal. An update on the situation has now emerged that will delight fans.

United confident of Fernandes stay

According to talkSPORT, United are confident that Fernandes will extend his stay at Old Trafford. The report states: “Manchester United are confident captain Bruno Fernandes will decide to stay this summer.”

“Fernandes has a £57million release clause in his contract that can be activated by overseas clubs, sparking fears among fans they could lose their talismanic captain. His stock is high after breaking the Premier League record for the most assists in a single season.”

“However, United officials see the Portuguese playmaker speaking openly about his aims for bringing silverware to Old Trafford next season as a positive sign he does not plan to quit. Sources suggest Fernandes also approved of United’s decision to hand Michael Carrick the manager’s job on a long-term basis.”

The report goes on to state that while United are openly courting West Ham United’s Mateus Fernandes, they want the 21 year old to team up with their mercurial skipper, rather than replace him. It concludes: “United are planning a midfield rebuild, but it is thought they want West Ham’s Mateus Fernandes to play alongside his namesake, rather than replace him.”

Final Thoughts

Fernandes’ contract renewal process is perhaps as important as United’s pursuit of world-class midfield reinforcements this summer. If the Red Devils are to return to their heyday under Carrick next season, they need their Portuguese talisman pulling the strings in the No. 10 role.
