Palmeiras have started 2026 with only two signings after a strategic reset, prioritising targeted experience over volume. A centre-back and a holding midfielder remain on the agenda, though internal feeling is that additions now are unlikely.
According to Globo.com, after 12 arrivals and a major overhaul in 2025, the club shifted to precise moves aimed at improving the starting line-up. Marlon Freitas, 30, came from Botafogo, and priority targets were Jhon Arias, Danilo and Nino.
Arias agreed to join in February, with Palmeiras exploiting Wolverhampton’s poor form, bottom in England, to make the deal work amid competition from Fluminense. Talks also opened for Atlético de Madrid’s Thiago Almada as a market opportunity, but he did not show interest in returning to Brazil.
Danilo’s case differs. Botafogo, in a letter from John Textor, said they would not negotiate with Palmeiras, who have stepped away, and a signing in that role now is seen as improbable.
With Nino, discussions progressed with his camp, but Zenit would not release him mid European season. Palmeiras aim to revisit the move in the mid-year window and remain focused on Nino, having mapped alternatives but ruling out another centre-back for now.
Brazil’s first transfer window closes on 3 March. A domestic-only exception runs from 4 to 27 March for players who featured in the 2026 state championships, who must prove participation, including loan returns and players whose contracts ended by 3 March. The expectation is that further business will wait for the busier mid-year window.
