Despite the team’s poor league form under him, there have been some positives. United dug deep to secure a 2-2 draw against high-flying Liverpool at Anfield last weekend.

They also performed well in the Manchester derby, staging a comeback to beat reigning champions Manchester City 2-1 at the Etihad Stadium.

The 39-year-old knows the scale of his challenges as United’s manager but is determined to make the club league champions again.

He told the Premier League’s official channel: “It is important to win the Premier League, more than anything. I want to help this club. I felt a great connection with everybody here.

“It is a hard thing to do to be confident in this moment. But I dream of winning the Premier League in our stadium with our fans. After so much time and many problems, winning again is the best thing we can achieve.”

The Portuguese admitted that he would have loved to play with United legends Eric Cantona and Roy Keane but was emphatic about how he would have enjoyed playing with the latter.

He described Keane as a player ‘who does all the job’ and said, ‘it would be fun’ to have played with him.

Keane won 17 trophies at United, including seven league titles and one Champions League. He was one of the best midfielders of his generation and renowned for his aggressive style of play.#

During his formative years as a coach, Amorim spent a ‘week-long internship’ under former Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho.

He described working with him as ‘special’ and admitted that he still learns from him.

Mourinho won two trophies at Man United but left the club unceremoniously. Amorim will be hoping to surpass his achievements at Old Trafford.
