Swansea City have previous experience of helping Chelsea youngsters develop
With less than two weeks to go before Swansea City begin their Championship campaign, Alan Sheehan will be looking to add the finishing touches to his squad after a successful transfer window so far.
The Swans have been active in the market with a number of exciting additions, but Sheehan will be under no illusions that his squad is lacking depth and quality in certain areas.
On the face of it, Swansea aren't lacking depth at striker, with the likes of Zan Vipotnik, Liam Cullen, Florian Bianchini and Jerry Yates all on their books capable of leading the line, but with Yates set to move on, and none of the aforementioned players proving prolific in front of goal, it's a position they could do with strengthening.
Swansea have been linked with a move for former striker Oli McBurnie in recent days, as well as a move for Chelsea man Marc Guiu, as per Spanish outlet Mundo Deportivo, with the youngster set to leave Stamford Bridge on loan this summer.
Chelsea want the 19-year-old to gain experience in English football with a loan move, and Swansea should be using their previous experience of developing Chelsea youngsters in their favour if they're serious about striking a deal.
Swansea have experience of developing Chelsea players in the past, and they should be using that evidence to convince the side from West London that SA1 is the best place for Guiu to gain experience of English football.
In January 2020, Swansea signed Marc Guehi and Conor Gallagher on loan from the Blues and undoubtedly played an important role in developing them into the players they are today, with both players regulars in the England squad and playing for Crystal Palace and Atlético Madrid respectively.
Gallagher spent six months in a Swansea shirt after impressing for Charlton where he continued his impressive Championship form, but it's Guehi who is an ideal example of what a loan spell in South Wales can do.
The central defender spent 18 months on loan at Swansea, and after a slow start became a crucial figure for Steve Cooper's side as they reached the Championship play-offs in consecutive seasons. The Guehi who left Swansea was a completely different player to the one that joined, and the club should point to that in a bid to convince Chelsea to send Guiu their way.
Guehi earned an £18m move to Crystal Palace off the back of his loan at Swansea, and after his form at Selhurst Park there may well be some regrets from Chelsea that they parted ways with him in 2021, particularly for that fee.
It's no exaggeration to say that the loan move to Swansea changed Guehi's career, and Swansea would be silly not to use that example in negotiations for Guiu.
It remains to be seen if Guiu would be willing to play Championship football, but the 19-year-old would certainly benefit from a season of Championship action as he looks to adapt to English football.
The Spaniard is seen as an exciting prospect and found the back of the net six times in 16 appearances for Enzo Maresca's side last season, with all six goals coming in the Europa Conference League on their way to lifting the trophy.
However, Guiu featured just three times in the Premier League, showing he needs a loan away from Stamford Bridge to get some regular playing time under his belt.
Having scored two goals in seven appearances for Barcelona prior to his move to Chelsea last summer, it's clear that he's a talented player, and he may think a loan move to the Championship is below him, despite his club's wishes to loan him to an English club.
If Swansea were able to convince Guiu to make the move to SA1, it would be a real statement of intent and could be the difference between finishing in the play-offs or not for Sheehan's side.
Given his impressive CV at such a young age, there'll be plenty of clubs keen to sign Guiu, but Swansea should use Guehi and Gallagher as examples of why a move to South Wales is the right one for the striker.
