Sheffield United youngster Andre Brooks has received his first senior international call-up for Jamaica, capping off a breakthrough season that has seen him emerge as one of the Blades’ most exciting attacking outlets.
The 22-year-old winger has been included in Rudolph Speid’s 27-man squad for the upcoming inter-continental play-offs, where Jamaica will face New Caledonia in Mexico on March 26, with a potential tie against DR Congo to follow on March 31.
Brooks’ rise this season has been built on consistent, high-impact performances in the final third. He has netted six times this season and served up a couple of assists in 35 games. According to FotMob data, he has stood out as one of Sheffield United’s most productive young attackers.
He is averaging close to 0.30 expected goals (xG) per game, an impressive figure for a wide player, highlighting his ability to get into dangerous scoring positions rather than staying on the periphery. His shots per game have also increased significantly compared to last season, showing a growing confidence to take responsibility in attacking situations.
Brooks has contributed with roughly 1.3 chances created per game, underlining his dual threat as both a scorer and provider, placing him among the more effective creators in the squad despite his age.
One of his most eye-catching metrics is his dribbling output. Brooks is completing two successful dribbles per game, often progressing the ball into the final third and committing defenders. This directness has made him a key transitional weapon for Chris Wilder’s side down the right.
In addition, his touches in the opposition box (4.50) rank highly among Sheffield United players, illustrating his ability to consistently impact high-value areas on the pitch.
Despite the excitement around Brooks, speaking to SUTV, manager Chris Wilder has been careful to balance praise with realism following the defeat to Wrexham.
“You’re asking me a question about a boy’s progression and there are young boys in there and they’re learning on the job and getting punished when they don’t get it right. Brooksy has been excellent for us, physically he has to be better in my opinion to last the 90 but he gives us a spark.
Like I said I looked at the xG table and we’re 4th or 5th and the teams around us have had time to build and 20% of their squad aren’t under 22 but that’s how it is.
He has been outstanding, he has so much to learn and he’s a willing boy, a Sheffield boy. I might text him later on to congratulate him but ultimately he and we all are a team that’s lost another game we’ve given away.”
Brooks is not the only Sheffield United player heading out on international duty. Midfielder Sydie Peck has once again been selected for England’s U21 squad for European Championship qualifiers against Andorra and Moldova. At senior level, Adam Davies joins up with Wales, while Chiedozie Ogbene links up with the Republic of Ireland for crucial World Cup play-off fixtures.
Elsewhere, Tahith Chong has been named in Curaçao’s squad for matches against China and Australia in Melbourne, while loanee Tyler Bindon will represent New Zealand in friendlies against Finland and Chile.
Brooks’ performances this season have combined energy, end product, and fearless attacking intent and it’s something that’s only going to increase once he gets international experience under his belt, which paints a very bright picture for his and United’s future.
