Will La Liga's decision influence Serie A?
The recent decision by LaLiga to cancel the scheduled match between Villarreal and FC Barcelona in Miami is already making waves. According to The Guardian, this move could lead to the cancellation of another international fixture: the clash between AC Milan and Como 1907, set to take place in Australia.
LaLiga backed out of staging its game abroad following player protests during the league’s seventh matchday. The players voiced their frustration over an overloaded schedule and the lack of consultation on decisions directly impacting them.
The Milan vs Como showdown, scheduled for February 8, 2026, at Perth’s Optus Stadium (65,000 seats), could now be in jeopardy. While UEFA has already greenlit the fixture, the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) still needs to give its final approval and is reportedly facing intense pressure to deny it.
For now, no official decision has been announced, but the strong stance taken by Spanish players and LaLiga’s retreat could force Serie A to reconsider its plans for overseas matches.
