Matheus França is among Vasco’s highest earners yet has slipped down the pecking order after underwhelming displays since arriving last year.

According to Globo.com, the Crystal Palace loanee is contracted until July and has made 21 appearances without a goal or assist.

He came on in the second half of Thursday’s defeat to Mirassol in the Campeonato Brasileiro opener and again made little impact. Inside the club, his level is viewed as below expectations.

Even so, there is no intention at this stage to send him back before the end of the deal, and Fernando Diniz counts on him as he does the rest of the squad, although he is now fourth choice for the playmaker role.

New signing Johan Rojas has already moved ahead of him in the hierarchy. Coutinho is seen as the starter, and Portuguese midfielder Nuno Moreira can also operate centrally.
