Willi Orbán’s proposed Saudi Arabia move collapses at the last minute | OneFootball

RB Leipzig defender Willi Orbán’s proposed move to Saudi Pro League side Al-Diriyah has collapsed at the final stage.

Sky Germany reports that Leipzig blocked the transfer as it neared completion, with Managing Director for Sport Marcel Schäfer reportedly taking the final call.

The call is believed to have been influenced by a recent injury to defender Abdoul Koné, prompting Leipzig to keep one of their most experienced players ahead of the new campaign.

A medical had been scheduled for Monday morning and an Al-Diriyah doctor had travelled to Leipzig in anticipation. Following the change of stance, the medical was cancelled and the doctor will return to Saudi Arabia.

Despite being in line to earn €15 million over a two-year contract in Saudi Arabia, Orbán will remain at Leipzig and is expected to feature heavily for Martin Demichelis’ side in the Champions League. The 33-year-old is under contract with the Bundesliga club until 2027.
