William Saliba will not undergo back surgery after he left France’s World Cup semi-final defeat to Spain, 0-2, with a back issue.
The centre-back was substituted after about 30 minutes in that match. The club said in a statement that extensive assessments concluded an operation was not recommended.
He had waited to consult Arsenal before making a final decision. The 25-year-old, formerly of Marseille, has been managing chronic back pain.
He will now follow a programme of treatment and rest. The length of his lay-off cannot be known precisely and will depend on how he feels.
It will be measured in months.
