Santos said on Monday that Willian Arão underwent surgery to remove a kidney stone, sidelining him from any physical activity for at least two weeks.

The issue flared after the goalless draw with Red Bull Bragantino on Sunday, in the fifth round of the Paulistão at Neo Química Arena, when he suffered a renal lithiasis episode and was taken to a hospital in São Paulo.

Tests found a large stone and both hospital specialists and the club’s medical department advised surgery to prevent anything more serious. He will keep an internal catheter for a few days during the initial recovery.

Arão had left the Bragantino match at half time, replaced by João Schmidt, which raised concern among the coaching staff.

The captain will miss at least two matches in the closing stretch of the classification phase. Santos have six points and are 10th, outside the knockout places.

They have three fixtures left before the knockouts, São Paulo on Saturday and Noroeste on eight February, then Velo Clube on 15, the final game of the phase.

Attention also turns to the start of the Brasileirão, with an opener at Chapecoense in Chapecó on Wednesday at 20h Brasília time.
