Willian is negotiating an early termination of his Grêmio contract after being told he is no longer in the club’s plans, and he is targeting a move abroad. According to Globo.com, discussions are under way over his next step.

The 37-year-old is tied to Grêmio until the end of 2026 and could already sign a pre-contract for 2027, but he wants to bring the deal to a close sooner. He has played nine Brasileirão matches and could join another Série A side, although his focus is to leave Brazil.

Grêmio’s hierarchy reached their decision in recent days. Signed in September last year, Willian did not deliver the level the coaching staff expected.

There are no complaints about his conduct, but he no longer fits the new salary profile as the club looks to trim its wage bill. He is expected to continue training until the situation is resolved.

His last outing came in the 2-1 defeat at Mirassol on 17 July at the Maião, when he entered at half-time in the 19th round of the Brasileirão.

He was then on the bench for the away loss to Bolívar in the Copa Sudamericana, and was not selected for the meeting with Fluminense last Sunday.

On Monday the club announced Croatian midfielder Filip Krovinovic, further narrowing Willian’s opportunities.

Willian has made 28 appearances for Grêmio, scoring two goals and providing five assists. Previously of Corinthians, Shakhtar Donetsk, Chelsea, Arsenal, Fulham and Olympiacos, he played at the 2014 and 2018 World Cups.
